Not-for-Profits in Society

The voluntary spirit which generated the activities of the not-for-profit sector was, early in its history, recognized as something which set the United States apart from the rest of the world.  The social safety valve, think tank, and human service functions which the sector fulfills today are vital to our survival.  To continue their role in the twenty-first century, not-for-profits must develop ever more effective means of management.  Maintaining the strength of our nation depends upon the success of such efforts.

Not-for-Profit Vision is dedicated to providing management support services in all price ranges to assist Third Sector organizations in meeting the challenge and responsibility of service to the world.  Central to all of NfPVision’s work is an awareness of the primacy of organizational mission in every facet of management.

A Conceptual Model of Not-for-Profit Organizations

The center of all not-for-profit work is mission.  The next most critical element is awareness of the public--the market--being served.  After the why and who are fully appreciated, the what--programming--can be considered.  Finally, the organization must find and effectively utilize the necessary resources to carry out its work.  Personnel and finances, along with facilities, equpment, and supplies provide the support for all of a not-for-profit's activities.  (For a fuller discussion of the management implications of this model, see It's All Related: "Enlightened" Not-for-Profit Management .)

Leadership

Consciously or not, all management practices are based upon a mental model of the nature of leadership.  NfPVision ’s work is rooted in an understanding of leadership as a collaborative process, a view which fits well with the work and mission of the not-for-profit sector.
